Programme overview

What this programme is

A free foundation covering how hotel distribution actually works: where rooms are sold, what each channel costs, why parity matters, and how direct booking economics compare. Designed for people who need the vocabulary before a harder conversation.

Who it is for

  • Front office and reservations staff moving toward commercial roles
  • Owners and operators of small properties without a revenue function
  • Agency and vendor staff working with hospitality clients for the first time
  • Anyone about to sit in a revenue meeting and wanting to follow it

On completion you will be able to

Learning outcomes

  • Describe the main distribution channels and what each genuinely costs
  • Calculate occupancy, ADR and RevPAR correctly and read them together
  • Explain rate parity, why it is breached, and where breaches originate
  • Compare direct and intermediated booking economics on a like-for-like basis
  • Identify the three most common commission leaks in a small property

Curriculum

4 modules, 16 lessons

Every module ends with a graded assignment worked against real data. The material is sequenced so that each module’s assignment depends on the one before it.

The channel landscape, described plainly.

Lessons
  • Direct channels: website, booking engine, telephone, walk-in
  • Marketplaces and how commission and merchant models differ
  • Wholesalers, bed banks and where their inventory ends up
  • Corporate, consortia and travel management company channels
Assignment Map your own property's channels and estimate the share of each.

Three numbers, calculated correctly and read together.

Lessons
  • Occupancy: the denominator people get wrong
  • ADR: what it conceals when read alone
  • RevPAR: combining rate and volume, and its limits
  • A worked example across a full month of a small property
Assignment Calculate all three for a supplied month and interpret the result.

Commission is the visible cost. It is not the whole cost.

Lessons
  • Commission structures and typical rates by channel
  • Loyalty programme discounts stacked on top of commission
  • The costs that never appear on an invoice
  • A like-for-like comparison of a direct and an intermediated booking
Assignment Compare the net contribution of the same room sold through two channels.

What it means, why it breaks, and what to do about it.

Lessons
  • What parity is and what it is not
  • Where breaches actually originate — usually not the contracted marketplace
  • How to shop your own rates properly, in ten minutes a week
  • What to do when you find a breach
Assignment Shop your own property across three points of sale and record what you find.

Common questions

Yes. No card details are collected and there is no trial period. It exists because a good proportion of the commercial problems we are asked to solve begin with a distribution decision made without this foundation.

It covers the assumed knowledge for the Certified Hotel Revenue Manager programme, so it is a reasonable place to start. There is no obligation, and completion carries no expectation of enrolment.

Around three hours of material. Participants who complete the assignments against their own property data typically spend closer to five, and get considerably more out of it.
